How ACT raw-to-scale conversion works
Your raw score is the number of scored questions you answered correctly in one section. Wrong and blank answers both count as zero, so there is no penalty for guessing. ACT then converts each raw score to a scale score from 1 to 36 using a table built for that exact test form.
- Check your answers against the scoring key for the test you took.
- Skip the unscored field-test questions. The key marks them, and they are not in the same positions on every form.
- Count your correct scored answers in each section. That count is your raw score.
- Find that raw score in the same test's conversion table. The number beside it is your scale score.
Scored questions on the enhanced ACT
| Section | Scored questions | Questions on the test |
|---|---|---|
| English | 40 | 50 |
| Math | 41 | 45 |
| Reading | 27 | 36 |
| Science | 34 | 40 |
The difference is field-test questions, which ACT tries out for future tests. They appear on the test but never affect your score.
Why conversion tables differ between tests
No two ACT forms are exactly equally difficult. ACT adjusts for that in the conversion table, so a scale score means the same thing on every form even though the raw score needed for it can change. That is why there is no single formula that turns a raw score into a scale score.
| Math raw score | ACT Practice Test 1 | ACT Practice Test 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 20 of 41 | 19 | 18 |
| 25 of 41 | 24 | 22 |
| 30 of 41 | 28 | 26 |
| 35 of 41 | 32 | 30 |
The same 30 correct Math answers earn a 28 on one test and a 26 on the other. Practice Tests 2, 3 and 4 are different tests, but ACT publishes the same tables for all three.
Common mistakes
- Converting a percentage. 80% correct does not map to a fixed scale score. Use the test's table.
- Counting field-test questions. A correct answer on an unscored question adds nothing to the raw score.
- Borrowing another form's table. It can be off by two or more points in places, as the Math example shows.
- Mixing formats. Legacy ACT sections had more questions (English 75, Math 60), so their tables cannot be used for the enhanced test, or the other way round.
Practice tests on ACT Test Now are original questions, so ACT's tables do not apply to them. Their results page shows a clearly labeled estimated scale score instead.

Raw score questions
Got questions? We have answers.
Short, direct answers about this part of the site and the ACT itself.
What is an ACT raw score?
Your raw score is the number of scored questions you answered correctly in a section. Incorrect and unanswered questions both count as zero, and the unscored field-test questions on each section do not count at all.
How do I convert raw scores to scaled scores?
Find your raw score in the conversion table printed with the specific test you took. The scale score next to it is your result. This converter does that lookup for the official ACT practice tests listed above, using ACT's own tables.
Does every ACT test use the same conversion chart?
No. Each form has its own table because forms differ slightly in difficulty. For example, 30 correct Math answers convert to 28 on ACT Practice Test 1 but 26 on ACT Practice Test 2. A chart from a different test can only give you an approximate score.
How many questions are scored on the enhanced ACT?
English has 40 scored questions out of 50, Math 41 of 45, Reading 27 of 36 and the optional Science section 34 of 40. The rest are field-test questions that do not count toward your score.
Why can I not convert a Legacy ACT raw score here?
ACT no longer publishes the Legacy practice test guide we would need to cite, and we will not show a score from an unverified or estimated table. If you have a Legacy test booklet or score report, use the conversion table printed in it.
Can I use this for ACT Test Now practice tests?
No. Our questions are original, not ACT forms, so ACT's tables do not apply to them. Our results page gives an estimated scale score for each of our tests and labels it as an estimate.
