2018 concordance

An ACT Composite of 24 corresponds to SAT Total scores from 1160 to 1190. 1180 is the single score ACT and College Board give when one number is needed.

Concordance scores provide a comparison between the ACT and SAT. They do not predict your exact performance on the other test.

How to read an ACT to SAT comparison

One ACT Composite covers several SAT Totals, because the SAT scale has many more possible scores. The range is every SAT score the study linked to your ACT score. The single score is the point inside that range that ACT and College Board recommend when a form or spreadsheet needs one number.

The tables come from a joint ACT and College Board study that matched score distributions of students who took both tests. The Composite tables were built from concordances of the ACT sum score, which is why they do not follow a straight-line formula. A shortcut such as multiplying the ACT score by 44 misses the official single score by as much as 194 points.

Concordance is a comparison, not a prediction

A comparable score describes students as a group. It does not tell you what you would score on the SAT: the two tests are timed differently, cover content differently, and reward different strategies. The best way to compare is a timed practice test of each.

Are these tables still current?

Yes. The 2018 tables are the latest official ACT/SAT concordance, and ACT notes they are not updated every year. They were built before the enhanced ACT and the digital SAT, so colleges and scholarship programs may publish their own guidance. When a program states how it compares scores, follow that.

Common mistakes

  • Reversing the table. SAT to ACT has its own official table. Use the SAT to ACT converter for that direction.
  • Comparing percentages. A 30 out of 36 and a 1330 out of 1600 are not comparable that way.
  • Converting section scores. This table compares an ACT Composite with an SAT Total only.

What SAT score is equivalent to ACT 30?

An ACT Composite of 30 corresponds to an SAT Total of 1370, within an SAT range of 1360 to 1380, according to the official 2018 concordance tables.

What SAT score is equivalent to ACT 32?

An ACT Composite of 32 corresponds to an SAT Total of 1430, within an SAT range of 1420 to 1440, according to the official 2018 concordance tables.

Are ACT and SAT scores directly interchangeable?

No. Concordance shows which scores are comparable for students as a group; it does not equate the tests or predict an individual's score. Colleges usually accept either test and review each on its own scale.

Are the concordance tables still valid?

The 2018 ACT/SAT concordance is still the latest official version, and ACT says the tables are not updated annually. They predate the enhanced ACT and the digital SAT, so follow any comparison guidance a specific college or program publishes.

Why does the chart stop at ACT 9?

The official study published comparisons for ACT Composite scores of 9 to 36 only. For lower scores there is no official SAT comparison, so this converter does not show one.
